Shobdon Village

The Company

Run by husband and wife team Martin and Aileen Lovell, Shobdon Village Post Office and Convenience Store is a vital hub of the community, serving over 700 people and hundreds of tourists during the Summer months.

Its ability to combine essential services with a passion for investing in the latest technology has seen it receive numerous plaudits, including the Community Heroes Award and the Independent Achievers Academy’s Overall Best Shop in 2007.

The Situation

The retail world – driven by the big supermarket chains - has been one of the biggest pioneers when it comes to the use of ICT and this has seen consumers expect more choice, cheaper costs and greater efficiencies.

Recognising the need to meet all of these requirements, Shobdon Village Post Office were keen to explore ways of improving delivery schedules and point of sale information, not to mention the opportunity of marketing their business through the powers of the web.

The Solution

Martin and Aileen completed extensive research around their IT options and, after consulting Business Link West Midlands on how it would be integrated into their company, the couple used IT to provide EPOS and back office function, on-line ordering and supplier exchange information.

In addition to this drive, they also developed and launched a new website in conjunction with key village organisations including the Parish Council. This now promotes the business and special offers, whilst also showcasing all aspects of village life.

Results

“We have enjoyed numerous business benefits, from greater control and understanding of the company to targeting customers more effectively and which lines/promotions are more profitable than others.

“The website has also helped to promote and cultivate the village spirit that Shobdon is synonymous for.”
